Creation Trust, will celebrate our 10 year anniversary in 2017. To mark the occasion we are planning a year of activities and events for local people.
In March, we officially open the latest new homes on the estate, named after local people, as a result of Creation’s ‘Put it on the Map’ heritage project. These include boxer Lloyd Honeyghan and racing tipster Prince Monolulu. We are planning an exhibition to launch a collection of short stories and poems inspired by the Aylesbury estate. We are commissioning artists to produce limited edition covers for our community magazine, The Echo, which we will sell to pay for the resident Christmas hampers. Later in the year there will be a sports tournament, a large community party and a special event for older people. Throughout the year we will be tweeting all our events and news with #weare10.
Creation Trust was set up as a registered charity in October 2007 as the successor organisation to the Aylesbury New Deal for Communities (NDC), one of 39 NDCs set up by Tony Blair’s government in Britain’s most deprived areas. At the heart of our work is ensuring that residents on the estate receive real benefits from the regeneration of the Aylesbury estate. For us, that is not just about the better homes and community facilities, but social and economic advantages - employment, education and training, improvements in health and well being and a reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour.
Since we were founded we have run programmes to support residents to get the most from the changes in the area. Our employment programme, SE17Working, assists an average of 80 residents a year into jobs. Our resident Support team helps people who are experiencing difficulties, especially older residents and those with mental and physical health problems. We are currently delivering projects for young people in the Giraffe House in Burgess Park.
Over half the places on Creation’s Board of Trustees are reserved for resident members; this means that local people have real influence over the plans for the estate and the future of the area.
