After participating in the Fast Track to work programme, mum of three Tulay, has managed to find a job that fits in with her children and makes her feel good about herself.

How long had you been out of work before you joined SE17Working?

I hadn’t worked for years. I am not very good at reading and writing, which made me feel really embarrassed about applying for jobs. I had been going to college, to learn, but then I had my children and they became my priority. I wanted to work, but I didn’t think anyone would take me on.

What did you do with SE17Working? How did it help?

I started doing the Fast Track to Work programme, we did our CVs and interview practice and looking for jobs. It was good just to get up in the morning and have something to do and somewhere to go. I was starting to feel better in myself.

What job did you get?

I got a job as Lunchtime Supervisor at Walworth Academy. I have to be in the corridors when the classes are in, check the kids diary books, to see if they are where they are supposed to be. Every week there is something different to do, so we never get bored.  My children all went to Walworth, and some of the teachers remember them, and ask how they are doing. At first we were taken on part-time, but because they have seen how I am with the kids and how I do the work, they have chosen me to work full time.

How do you feel now you are employed?

When I first started working, I was really tired, I had back pain and sore legs, but your body gets used to it very quickly! I love my job, it puts a smile on my face, I like feeling busy, getting my kids ready in the morning and then going off to work. When you are at home every day, you have too much time to sit and think.

Are you better off now you are working?

I was so happy to get away from the job centre! I hated going there. I am slightly better off, now I am working, I am saving up to take my children to Turkey next year for a holiday.

What advice would you give to anyone looking for work?

I would say go for it! I feel so much better in myself, I have made friends, I am more confident. Every mother should go out and work, you can do more for your kids and it’s good for your children to see you working.  I used to feel so ashamed about my reading and writing, but I don’t feel that anymore, there is no need to hide!
