Black History Month 2019
Tuesday 5th November 2019
SE17Working celebrated Black History month, with a special event organised by local job seekers and attended by over 120 residents.
As part of the SE17Working Community Engagement Workshop, participants were tasked with organising a local free event. They chose to do a Black History Month (BHM) Family Fun Day.
Over 120 attendees particpated in 4 scheduled sessions, including face-painting; Keep Fit; Films; Competitions; Advice Stalls; and Local History Talks. The film screenings in particular were very popular , they featured ‘Nice! – Norman Beaton’ and ‘Not our Problem – Trevor McDonald.
Whilst others participated in playing cultural games, those played for centuries in Africa and the Caribbean such as Ludi and Backgammon and of course Dominoes. We were delighted to also have Old Kent Road Fire Station in attendance as we celebrated the life of George. A. Roberts, the first black Fireman in Southwark.
The afternoon’s activities were accompanied by music and Chicken and Red Pea Soup, and despite the terrible weather - a great time was had by all!!
Also congratulations to Lucy Ohamud for winning the top prize of a £30 Voucher by naming all the artefacts in the exhibition!!
